Course Description
Directed Studies in Art focusing on Drawing is a course specifically
designed for students to work directly from life in Central Europe.
Imagery will include the architecture, interiors, landscape, and
people encountered while travelling in the Czech Republic, Austria,
Bratislava, Hungary, and Poland. In a drawing journal format students
will carefully observe and render the architecture, interiors
and landscape. During the trip students will encounter drawings
in museums and galleries created by masters representative from
all of the major art periods.
Course Objectives
The objective of this course is for the student to experience
the significance of the artist's journal and collect visual information
that can be used as a resource for later works and presentations.
The journal is a concrete form of careful observation and represents
artistic analysis of the subjects studied, and in turn serves
as a visual documentation of the student's experience in Central
Europe. Student's skill in drawing technique and media will be
refined and expanded.
Course Requirements
The student will complete 36 serious drawings in a bound journal.
Students will work in a variety of media. The basic media listed
below should be purchased before the trip - students will have
the opportunity to expand their supplies while visiting art supply
stores in Europe. Note: Students may bring additional supplies
form the states if so desired.
Students will learn terminology, technique, and approach to working
directly from life. Students will experience plein air drawing
on a routine basis. Informal group and individual critique is
a major emphasis as a means to examine and learn from completed
artworks.
Before final departure from Prague to the United States, the professor
will examine student's journal to analyze their accomplishments.
